There are many hurdles when it comes to transporting food safely. From warehouse to journey to end-customer, strict measures must be in place to ensure food stays fresh. Without those measures, companies face legal issues and financial losses.
17.8 million tonnes of food were transported in the UK last year. As such, it’s vital that robust regulations are in place, such as the BRCGS accreditation. In this blog, we look at the challenges involved in transporting food safely.
Challenges of transporting food
Every cargo has its own challenges. As most food transported is for human consumption, haulage companies must follow strict guidelines. Depending on the food, challenges include:
- Determining the best packaging. This must allow the food to stay within correct temperatures while keeping it undamaged and separate from other foods.
- Keeping the correct temperature. Many foods are extremely sensitive to temperature fluctuations and must be kept within a strict range.
- Reducing impact. Food must also arrive at the consumer unblemished. Many people judge food on its looks, so transport companies must minimise damage.
- Delivering quickly. Of course, the food must arrive on time. Even in temperature-controlled conditions, food must arrive quickly for maximum freshness.
Haulage companies must track temperatures closely to ensure foods are safe on arrival.
Temperature monitoring
Temperature and humidity can have severely damaging effects for many foodstuffs. Therefore, suitable conditions must be maintained throughout transport. Some foods are more sensitive than others.
Meat transportation
Meat transportation is a particular challenge. Without appropriate temperatures, meat spoils very quickly.
Meats must also be kept apart during the entire journey to prevent contamination. Companies will consider packing or hanging meats depending on the exact type, then keep them in strict temperatures throughout transport. Proper temperatures are typically just above freezing.
Dairy transportation
Dairy transport brings similar challenges to meat transportation. Dairy is highly susceptible to contamination and spoilage, so it should be kept apart and in cold temperatures.
There are extra obstacles with milk haulage. Milk undergoes treatment to delay it from turning or spoiling. However, it does still need to be kept in clean food-grade tankers. These tankers must be chilled, cleaned before each use, and inspected thoroughly to ensure the highest levels of hygiene.
Fresh fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are another cargo that require strict conditions. However, they typically do not need to be as cold as meats or dairy products. As an extra challenge, they must also be kept free from pests.
As a perishable good, fruits and vegetables must then arrive as quickly as possible. Most fruits and vegetables are transported at temperatures between zero and 13°C.
Transport with care
Transporting food poses considerable challenges to haulage companies. Food must be kept free from contamination, in proper temperatures, and away from damage.
